The labrador retriever originated in Newfoundland where is was used to help fishermen bring their nets ashore. Nowadays apart from being a gundog the labrador is often used as a guide dog, for sniffing out drugs and explosives, and as a companion dog. Standing at around 56 cms the labrador is a friendly, responsive dog with a tendency to obesity unless regularly exercised! Standard labradors can have black, chocolate or golden coats.
