The Lhasa Apso originates from Tibet, where it was used as a companion dog in monasteries, and was known as far back as 600AD. The name 'Lhasa' probably refers to the capital of Tibet and the 'Apso', which means 'goat like' possibly a reference to the Lhasa Apso's long luxuriant coat. Historically the giving of a Lhasa Apso was a trademark gift of the Dalai Lama. The Lhasa Apso is a small dog, around 26 cms high, with a good sense of hearing and makes a fine guard dog.
