It is believed that the ancestors of the pug were brought from China to Holland where they obtained royal patronage and we adopted as the symbol of the House of Orange. They were brought to the UK in 1689 when William of Orange became king. With a thick set appearance and wrinkled face the pug resembles a miniature mastiff. It is an energetic dog with a big appetite - diet should be watched closely as obesity can very much shorten the life span of the pug.
