Dachshund The dachshund comes in smooth, long and wirehaired varieties and originates from short legged hunting dogs that have been popular in Germany since the Middle Ages. There are also miniture versions of all three types. They are loyal dogs with a 'big bark', their elongated body shape has led to them becoming known as 'sausage dogs'!
